Lipedema Column – Part 8

Christmas Time and Lipedema: Tips on How You Can Support Yourself Well

The pre-Christmas period, Christmas, and the holidays are a time of reflection, joy, and enjoyment for many people – but also of stress and indulgence. For those of us affected by lipedema, this time can be challenging and painful, as lavish meals and lack of exercise can quickly lead to swelling and pain.

Additionally, there is often pressure from family/friends or acquaintances, as the illness is often not taken seriously and you may have to listen to some remarks. But don't worry: With the right preparation, quick-witted responses about your health, and a few simple tips, you can enjoy the holidays and still take good care of your body with lipedema.

Find a balance

Holidays are meant to be a beautiful time, and that includes treating yourself. It's important not to put pressure on yourself with strict rules or prohibitions – this can lead to unnecessary stress, which can negatively affect your lipedema. Instead, it helps to consciously free yourself from this and allow these exceptions. Conscious time with family and also conscious enjoyment in the form of different food, outside of the usual routines. Remember, not every day has to be perfect. I myself live by the 80/20 method and simply make sure that I eat anti-inflammatory 80 percent of the time. When you treat yourself, enjoy it without fear of pain. The key is balance: A balanced relationship between holiday meals and your health helps you experience the holidays without guilt or increased lipedema pain.
